Fireman Sam, the Smokejumper

This idea popped into my head a few weeks ago. My son has once again become obsessed with Fireman Sam and wanted me to add the theme song to his playlist on my phone (which we listen to while driving). One of the lyrics really hit me that day, for no particular reason, but this flashed through my mind with the opening lyrics,

When he hears that fire alarm,
Sam is always cool and calm.
If you're stuck, give him a shout;
He'll be there to help you out.

So move aside make way, for Fireman Sam!
'cause he's gonna save the day, Fireman Sam.
'cause he's brave to the core,
Sam is the hero next door!
A flash of light erupts in the middle of an urban street, flanked by tall buildings. A tall, alien being emerges from a portal. It is digitigrade and bipedal, white and gray, with tentacles emerging beside forearms from its elbows. Its head is round, with an eyeless carapace on the top and nearly split in half by a creepy mouth filled with unsettling teeth. For a moment, all is stillness as the assorted pedestrians are overcome by shock at the strange sight. Then, the creature scans around and nonchalantly flings a car into a building, buckling a balcony and sending its occupants tumbling.

"Who defends this planet?" it calls out in startlingly clear English.

All is motion. Pedestrians scream and flee. The creature, bored more than angry, ambles gently down the street, inspecting cars, mailboxes, trees, etc. as though they were novelties. Wood, concrete, and metal give way at its merest touch, as though the world were made of paper.

Somewhere far removed from this scene, a blue light flashes. A male figure tugs a heavy backpack with an oxygen tank onto its back, zips up a bodysuit, and pulls on a helmet. A door behind him opens. Sunlight obscures his silhouette and the expanse of sky and whipping wind reveal that we are flying high in the air. Without hesitation, the figure flings himself out the door. Cut back to the street and he crashes to the ground in the superhero stance. He doffs his bodysuit, revealing a blue and yellow firefighter coat and pants. His face is obscured by a gasmask and face shield.

The creature turns to address him, "Ah, finally, the defender arrives. You will do battle for the fate ..." The creature trails off as it is clear the new arrival has paid it no heed but turned to the rescue.

The fireman, moving at superhuman speed, dashes back and forth across the scene of pandemonium, tipping a car to pull survivors from beneath, catching a woman falling from a cracked and collapsing balcony, forcing open a damaged door to release a flood of people from a smoke-filled lobby, etc.

A disembodied voice enters the fireman's ear, "That's the last of them, Smokejumper. No more vital signs on the scanner." The fireman sets down a woman and her child at the edge of the carnage, waving them off away from the creature far in the background. As they run, he unbuckles his mask and sheds his air tank, revealing his face for the first time (he looks like a young Dan Severn, strong jawed and mustachioed). He takes a deep, seething breath through his nostrils and a current runs through him as he straightens, fists clenched, the muscles in his back and neck and arms rippling. He turns and smashes the creature in the jaw with a huge, meaty hand, covering the distance between them as though it were a mere step. The creature's head twists sickly to the side, its jaw seemingly dislocated, but any impact ends at its neck. It twists its head and jaw back with an organic pop and stares at the man.

"The defender arrives," it coos with a lilt of pleasure.

[Insert battle scene here. Fireman Sam is clearly superhumanly strong, cracking punches with the old Justice League superman punch sound effects. He forces the creature back blow by blow, pounding it with all his strength. But, as before, the creature seems to shrug it off and fights back. It wraps a tentacle around his leg and hurls him into a building. It drags him into the air and smashes him through a car. Their battle is epic, trading blows no mortal could imagine. Throughout the battle, the disembodied voice counts down from 5 minutes.]

Finally, though, the creature triumphs and it pulls him up by the neck, bringing him face to face. "Is this all this planet can muster in its defense? Pathetic." It tosses the fireman aside into a pile of rubble and turns to walk away, mildly injured. The fireman, bruised and battered, with a swollen black eye and missing teeth, coughs up blood. A disembodied voice enters the fireman's ear. "On the ground."

"You stupid son of a bitch," he mutters. The creature turns, seemingly surprised he can still speak. "I'm not the defender. I'm just fucking crowd control." The creature follows his gaze upward to see more figures descending from the sky. These, however, are clearly flying under their own superpower. One alights next to the fireman and starts to provide first aid. Another lands between the creature and the others.

"What've we got, Sam?" he calls out over his shoulder.

"Unknown origin. Strength class C. Max speed 150. Ground-based. No demonstrated toxic or psychic concerns. Reach as-is, no projectiles. Can take a punch as well as it gives. And the fucker bites."

"Thanks, Sam. We'll take it from here."

Sam drops his head back against the pile of bricks, his duty done. The new arrival proceeds to punch a hole straight through the creature's chest, killing it near instantly.
